Studied history, German literature and communications in Munich and Cologne; gained his PhD in 1997 with a thesis on the political history of the Ulm School of Design from 1953–68, published with the supoport of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, Essen. Since then he has regularly published academic and journalistic contributions on design history and current developments in design.
Teaching on design criticism, theory and history at the University of Wuppertal and elsewhere. Current research project on the concept of “design”.
Since 2001 he has curated exhibitions during the Cologne Furniture Fair together with Martin Rendel (with Konstantin Grcic, Ross Lovegrove, Greg Lynn, Tokujin Yoshioka, Ronan + Erwan Bouroullec, Andrea Branzi, Stefan Ytterborn and others). The rendel & spitz agency has won many international design award.
Since 2004 member and chair of the IFG advisory board.
